I’ve started two new Cigar Box projects. A 3 string guitar and a 4 string banjo. The banjo will be tuned GDGB. I’m eliminating the the high D string.

May 15th, 2011:

I’ve started on my latest CBG project. This is the neck fitted to the box. I used a soldering iron to mark frets. The output jack is from a Fender Mini-Squier. I’m going to use a Ted Crocker “downunder” 3 string pick up and a 3 string bridge from moongazermusic.com. The 1 1/2″ sound holes will have copper daisy grommets.

Stay tuned for more build updates.

05/16/11 I have installed the 3 tuners that I removed from the mini-strat. I used a 5/16″ bit for the tuner holes and 1/16″ bit for pilot holes on the back.

05/26/11  Installed sound hole grommets, copper floral pattern. They were glued and soldered. Test fitted and mounted 3 string bridge from Moongazer Music. I used the neck plate from the mini-strat and used 8/32″ x 3/4″ brass machine screws and two nuts to secure the bridge. I need to buy some Loctite to secure the nuts.

The rest of the parts are ordered, Yay!

backgammon

I like to play backgammon and wanted to play online. I found a site that allowed deposits to play small stakes backgammon. I didn’t want to win or lose large sums of money, but wagering makes the game spicer. I joined play65.com and the gaming was fun until I tried to withdraw money from my account. It was a major pain just to let them know that I wanted to withdraw the money as that part of the site seemed to be having issues. After alot of annoyance I was able to finally complete the withdrawal request. It should have been processed in 304 days into my paypal account except after 8 business days the money still had not arrived. I contacted them again and was told that my request had been forwarded to the accounting department. After some research on the web, I discovered that there were accusations of cheating (dice favoring certain players) and difficulty with withdrawals. I’m glad that I never gave them more money than my initial deposit and from now on will do any wagering in person. Pay me when I win!

My recommendation is to not do business with the people at play65.com.

Still no answer from the play65 accounting department. I’m starting to think that they don’t intend to pay me. (sarcasm level 5)

I relocated last Summer to Redlands California in part to attend UC Riverside and work on a PhD in Computer Science. I was offered a fellowship, tuition + $30K a year. My experiences at UCR were less than satisfactory, with the exception of Amy Ricks in the CS department office, they generally sucked.

The majority of Grad students in my department were foreign nationals, primarily Chinese. It was annoying and depressing to attend a course and to here nothing but Chinese spoken with the sole exception of the lectures. There was no mentoring or advising offered to me during my stay at UCR. My official adviser was too busy and kept fobbing me off on Amy. I constantly made to feel like I was too old to be there and the wrong nationality to guarantee success.

The Graduate Division at UCR tried to get rid of me from almost the day I arrived. They were only interested in their statistics and had no interest in student success. I believe that Grad Division was more interested in catering to foreign students who paid the fat fees than American students. I believe that this attitude was fostered even more in the CS department due to the vast majority of tenured professors being foreign nationals. This begs the question of why an American Institution of Higher Learning’s academic department has so few American instructors? And so few American graduate students? I feel that I was the victim of discrimination based on my nationality in my own country and at a educational institution financed by my state and country.

Celebrity Charity Pushers

 WTF!  Comments Off
Apr 262011

I'd be curious to know how much celebrities actually donate to the charities they front for. Just sitting in front of a camera asking the rest of us to donate don't count for skittles. Saying that they are donating their valuable time is a falsehood. Their time is only valuable if someone is willing to pay for it and since the charity isn't paying for it their time has no actual cash value.

I have been working on "differentiating between binary strings created by humans and by random number generators." The length of the strings I have been working with are length = 50. I have collected a data set of 739 binary strings created by 6th, 7th and 8th grade students of a middle school in southern california for testing purposes. The students filled in a sheet of paper with 50 cells with random ones and zeros. There was no identifying information of students on the sheets of paper. The Strings were then input by hand. I will attach two versions to this post, raw data in a text file one string per line and a csv version. Clement Dataset Clement-Data CSV

This is a linked to the combined data sets post pre-processing in excel for use with WEKA .     Here you go ->>   CnR-combo

I will update this post with results from my experiments.

Here is a copy of the paper I wrote, Differentiating human and computer generated random binary strings

I've added a compensated bridge and covered the arm rest with black Plasti-Dip. The arm rest was giving me a rash on my right forearm. I use my dremel tool to buff out the metal of the arm rest and sprayed it with Plasti-Dip. Problem solved!
